I have been looking to find a trilogy of books I read as a child for YEARS...it's about a brother and sister, the brother is supposed to be a knight and the sister, a mage, they swap places and she hides her womanhood for years, eventually she finds a sword (something special about it...don't remember) I know this is going to sound sexist but the only scene from the book I remember clearly is she is swordfighting with the badguy and he slices through the bandages holding her breasts down and they pop up and everyone is shocked....even if you only know the name of ONE of the books, or the author(s) It would help me greatly...it's been driving me crazy for YEARS

The quartet is called "Song of the Lioness" by Tamora Pierce.

First book- "Alanna: the First Adventure"

Second book- "In the Hand of the Goddess" (this is where the sword fighting scene came from!)

Third book- "The Woman Who Rides Like a Man"

Fourth book- "Lioness Rampant"

P.S. Tammy (this is what her fans call her) has continued to write about the inhabitants of Tortall. "The Immortals" quartet is about Daine, a girl with "wild magic". The "Protector of the Small" quartet is Kel, the first openly female page. Then there's the duo about Alanna's daughter Aly.

And she's also written about characters in a completely different universe as well (they are just as compelling!)

I'm putting her website in the sources space. GO THERE, and rediscover the awesomeness that is Tammy's writing!

Yep, it does sound like Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce. Here's a description from Amazon:
Alanna of Trebond decides to be a knight instead of a lady and switches places with her brother to go the palace and train as the first Lady Knight in over a century! There's one problem, though... Girls aren't allowed to be knights! That doesn't stop her, though, she just hides it and keeps trying, although she does have a little trouble! As she battles through to win her shield, she meets many new friends, fights demon-like creatures and kills her arch-nemesis, the great sorcerer, Roger, Duke of Conte. After she wins her shield, she goes to the Bazhir desert and trains young mages for the Bloody Hawk tribe, and if that isn't enough, she later fights her way to the Dominion Jewel, a jewel that can call the very ground to fight enemies of Tortall. She just wanted to be a knight, but instead, she became the highest knight in the entire realm of Tortall, The King's Champion!!!

They sound like pretty good books. I don't know, haven't read them... but I'll just suggest that you check all the Newbery award winning books....browse through the list and see if something catches your eye. The one that came to mind from my Education/Literature class was The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley. I know there were sequels to that book, and it had a similar setting and plot. I just don't think I ever read it.

If that's not it, try browsing here
