What is the acceptable standard of beauty for women in Los Angeles? I recently moved from Cincinnati to LA. I am horrified to discover things like my roommates' company, where: I - at 100 pounds - would be at a middling sort of weight; everyone seems to have new, trendy clothes; everyone goes to "beauty clinics" for expensive procedures like tattooed eyebrows and collogen; everyone wears their hair in a style; etc. Surely, this is not the norm! Please tell me I'm right. It is too expensive, too fake, and too horrifying. What is the "real" standard of beauty here?

In Ohio, I don't have to do very much to be considered pretty. I'm thin with blond hair and blue eyes. As long as I am dressed appropriately for the situation - a business suit at work, for instance - no one is going to judge me harshly based on my appearance. Here, I feel like I have to turn my life upside down every day just to go to the supermarket. What is the minimum with which I can get by without being judged harshly?

Well, LA certainly is not Ohio. You know what? Just be yourself. Maybe that would be refreshing in a plastic society. You might even get discovered.

Unless you're in a hurry to conform, just do what you've done in Ohio and don't worry about it. The more you worry about it and let it vex you, the more you give validity to the superficial nature of what you're questioning in the first place.

Bottom line, there is never, nor will there be a "standard" of beauty...stop looking for it. Beauty is an aesthetic and it needn't conform to some sort of ISO9001 standard or somesuch. If you don't like it, don't do it...there's no gun to your head. Once you resign yourself to conforming is when to worry. That doesn't mean you have to put effort into standing out, it just means to follow your own choices of what looks *good* whether it matches somebody else's choice or not.

There are always superficial twits who judge regardless of the effort you do or don't put into your apperance...don't look for some magical "minimum" of accpetance...there never has been nor ever will be one.

Lighten up...please, you'll live longer.

As an LA native, I can tell you that what you've described is only true of LA transplants. If you want to look like a true local, just be yourself, or as you say, just dress appropriately for the situation. You won't be judged harshly by the real Angelenos.

The hell with other people's opinions, you ARE beautiful! You don't have to live up to other's standard whether it is LA, Cincinnati, Paris, London, New York, etc.

I hope that this is a "made-up" question & not REAL.

Go Bengals!

Just be yourself , its okay to be normal . You sound very pretty the way you are and its natural , the L.A.women should be jealous of you if they are spending lots of cash on beauty treatments ..
