The cartdiges are identical but Dell says that you can only get the ones for the Dell printer through Dell.com The guy at Office Depot said that some Lexmark cartridges will work in some Dell printers. Anybody know?

Not necessarily.
The Dell carts. let you use the entire ink well up. Lex's don't, usually locking up at 1/4 full.
Dell's will be cheaper, anyway.

Dell and Lexmark are same cartridges but they have different top cap. So Lexmark cartridge will not fit to Dell printer. But you can remove cap from Lexmark cartridge and replace it with Dell's cap.
