A sideshow attraction at local fairs used to be three maids in a tub who were presumably unclothed and were featured in an early version of this rhyme. It's possible this rhyme made fun of the men who enjoyed visiting them!

That's an easy one to explain:
Bert and Ernie were in the tub, as usual. But this time, they invited Mr. Hooper in there with them to video tape the event. Well, one thing led to another, and before long, Mr. Hooper was the meat in a Bert & Ernie sandwhich.
He's never been the same....

I think it was a convention from back in the day. That or a crafts fair after hours activity. I mean, it was a butcher, a baker and a candlestick maker......
