Almaty is a lovelly city, good places to eat, fun nightlife and the mountains surrounding the city is beautiful. Sadly though about 2/3rds of the country is desert so not much to see and do, but it was once on the Silk Route and as such has many very historical sites to visit most of which are fairly untouched since the days of marco polo. Parts of khazakhstan are dangerous but you will be fine in the capital and the area beyond - most kidnappings are oil money orientated - a foreign national is kidnapped, the oil company pay to get them back it is a business more than a criminal act (but still worth avoiding in that area). Uzbekistan is more beautiful as a country, in the steppes where horseriding and hiking is wonderful - even skiiing in the moutains. Uzbekistan is based mostly on about 4 citities - Tashkent, Samarkand, Bhukara and Khiva. They are also totally awesome if you like historical areas of interest. The people in Khazakhstan are very friendly - but the police less so! You would need to be an accomplished independant tourist to venture there alone - but a tour group would be fine. Few speak English - Russian being the number one language - without Russian it can be very difficult - but not impossible. I would say go, experience and enjoy!

A lot of people who are answering this question are so ignorant, because Kazakhstan is a very beautiful and flourishing country. It is oil rich and its economy is the fastest developing in post soviet union territory, even faster than Russian. It is the 9th largest country in the world for its territory. And the nature is very beautiful there. People are very friendly, generous and hospitable. They speak Kazakh and Russian. I think Borat is stupid because of his next to zero knowledge about Kazakhstan. Don't believe what he says, because he is a comedian from the UK who has never been to Kazakhstan. I personally enjoyed being there. It's not a dangerous place like some think. On the contrary, it is a civilized country with a very intresting culture and places. People there are very intelligent, eclictic and tolerent. What I say is GO THERE cuz it is a great country in the heart of Euarasia!

Kazakhstan is a very beautiful country. I would love to visit there. It is as big as western Europe. Miles and miles of beautiful empty steppe, lakes and tribesmen that hunt with eagles.
I was planning a trip to Mongolia and was hoping to go there via Kazakhstan, there is a very unusual and probably illegal air line that will fly you over the border..tickets available from a dry cleaning shop in Almaty.....honest !
I think it is wonderful that such a country exists, every traveller that I know who has been there comes back with many stories, mainly of blimming awful food, but also of the great kindness and generosity shown to them by the local people, particularly in the remote regions.
Do not expect the height of luxury, but do expect a total culture shock.
Do not believe what Borat says, remember he is a comedian.

There is no problem that I know about in kazakhstan. Some of the answers here are just ignorant - there is know war in kazakhstan, and i never heard about anyone taken hostage there... the comparison to iraq is just stupid.
I was there 5 years ago, just in alma-ata (the main city), on my way to kirgistan, which I defenetly recommend if you're interesting in hiking (lots of beautiful mountains).
I don't know how much interesting places there are in kazakhstan, and I think if I would go to this area I would rather go to ozbekistan, but I'm sure kaz. will be nice too, and anyway I wouldn't be afraid to go there.

Why yes! President Bush has just praised Kazakhstan as a fine, free nation, and he can't be wrong, can he?
