I started a new job and payday is every Friday. They told me they would be holding my first week's pay. I assumed this meant that the second Friday I would be getting two weeks pay. They only gave me one and said I would always be a week behind. Huh?

Yes, when you quit you'll still have that last paycheck coming

YES, MOST BUSINESSES HAVE EMPLOYEES WORK TWO WEEKS THEN PAY FOR THE FIRST WEEK. YOU ARE ALWAYS A WEEK BEHIND. IT IS ONE WAY TO PROTECT THE EMPLOYER FROM DISHONEST PEOPLE WHO MAY HAVE TAKEN PROPERTY. BUT THE MAIN REASON IS IF THE BUSINESS IS LARGE ENOUGH AND HAS MANY EMPLOYEES IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO GET ALL THOSE PAYCHECKS OUT IMMEDIATELY WHEN THE LAST WORKING DAY IS THURSDAY AND PAYDAY IS FRIDAY, FOR EXAMPLE. IT'S NOT PRACTICAL TO PAY ONE PERSON AT A TIME SO EVERYONE GETS PAID THE WEEK LATER. THEY'RE NOT TRYING TO CHEAT YOU, NEARLY EVERYONE DOES IT.

They are not holding your pay. They are just paying every pay period one week later. This gives them time to check time cards and process the payroll. They may use an outside service. Or they may have to send everything back to the main office.

Even if they went as fast as possible they would start on Monday and maybe pay on Tuesday. What if Monday was a holiday?

Yes, they can and it makes sense. How can they pay you for Friday before you work it. It is a very common practice with most employers. You are lucky they are not holding two weeks which they could.

Yes. This is to give them the opportunity to ensure that the check is accurate. They need accounting time to make the checks, etc.

Keep in mind that when you get paid on Friday, you still haven't finished working on that day itself.

This is more difficult for people who get paid biweekly, bimonthly, or even once per month.

They hold your first week's pay, and when you leave, you get it then. This is standard practice. You have to work a full week before your time goes in, then it goes to accounting, and they process it and cut your check.

Duh is this your first job? You came in on an off pay week therefore you only worked one week on that check. you will eventually be caught up and get a regular check bi weekly like the rest of the people there.
