The most valuable mineral resource is oil...

In terms of minerals/elements that are relatively easy to come by gold and platinum are indeed very valuable but there are other very rare minerals that are very likely much more valuable. For example radium. There are a number of web pages devoted to the periodic table of elements and some show the availability of each element in the earth's crust. I believe some may also show approximate value per ton, once, gram, milligram etc. Of course, carbon is very plentiful and when it's in the form of coal it is very cheap but when it is in the form of a diamond (which is a mineral) it is very valuable.

I know it is not Gold because Platinum is more expensive. It may be Oil because we depend on it for so many things.
