Most of our best decorations are outside, rather than inside. If you get some scrap board and cut the leg off an old pair of work pants or jeans around the knees and put this on the board (filled with newspaper or some other stuffing to make it leg-like, and then put old tennis shoes or work boots on the ends tied solidly, and then you take a pair of gloves, also slid onto the ends of short boards, you can make these appear to be coming up out of the ground. It's pretty effective if you put headstones above where they are coming up. We also make a very lifelike body out of old clothes, tennis shoes, a wig head, a hooded sweatshirt, and we tie it around with a noose and hang it from a tree by the bend in our road. When people's headlights hit it at night, they always come to a complete stop to check it out. It is creepy and totally real looking. The first year, the police were all by to check it out very cautiously until the were all convinced it was a gag. We have a very long deck across the front of our house, so we get about 8 or 10 pumpkins for my very artistic daughter to carve those real detailed carvings into. (You can get the template pages for them at any dollar store.) They make gumballs that look like bloody eyeballs. I always set a big dish of these out in October on the desk right inside our doorway. You can get cheap green lightbulbs to put in a few of your household lamps. When you turn these on in the evening, it casts an eery glow over whatever decorations you have done, especially if you've done the fake cobwebs and furniture sheet treatment. The cheap way to do this is to ask a local hotel if they are discarding any sheets. many of them have to get rid of anything with a permanent stain, tear, fray or whatever. If you can throw these over all of your furniture and put up that cheap cobwebbing, you can get a real old abandoned haunted house look very quickly and cheaply.

You could get lots of crepe paper and make ivy to drape everywhere. Hollow out a few pumpkins and make the place look like a pumpkin patch. Have a scary scarecrow in the middle, which is really just a couple of sticks tied together and clothing on it stuffed with straw. A chest with a leg hanging out somewhere as well. Again this could be just stuffed clothing, See if any old department stores have dummie heads that they dont want and paint the bottom bit red and spread a few heads around.

Cotton balls make good cob Webb's (stretch them out of course)!
Black construction paper to make spiders OR a black jelly bean with something like pained tooth picks as legs.

When I was a kid I remember walking up to this scare crow that was sitting in a chair with the bucket of candy in his lap. There was a sign next to it saying "Please help yourself and take ONE". (A young kids dream with no one around and a bucket of candy) Needless to say when I went to go grab a handful the scare crow grabbed me and screamed "The sign only says one!" Never would of thought the scare crow was a person it was that good.

Ok, this is buying stuff, but then you make stuff. That spray cob web stuff is inexpensive and spooky. It's a good start.

There were some people on my block they made cardboard gravestones and put them in their front yard they said things like 'here lies frankenstein' and stuff like that. I thought it was really creative.
