No, they need to be green in order for the cholorform to work. If the chloroform isn't working, the trees won't grow...this is where they get their energy.

Hey...hi, kooltymz here. See if this helps you a bit.
First of all, I notice that you haven't offered the species of the tree in question, however if it's for design purposes, color is important and it really wouldn't matter the species, try looking at the Hydrangea. Not that the leaves are blue, mind you, but that their flowers can be manipulated to bloom out as white, blue, red, pink, or purple depending on the pH of the soil.(See, acidic soils produce blue flowers, neutral soils produce very pale cream petals, and alkaline soils results in pink or purple. Hydrangeas are one of very few plants that accumulate aluminium. Aluminium is released from acidic soils, and in some species, forms complexes in the hydrangea flower giving them their blue color.)
In fact, years ago I had taken an old hydrangea that at when we had first gotten the property was in terrible condition, so much so that I had the tractor out and was preparing to uproot the ting when my wife came out of the house screaming (basically she was merely explaining the vengeance of an angered woman to me) and so the thing stayed and became ... my job ...to save, for even though it appeared so rotted out it still sparkled with bright pink flowers. Well, that I can share this story with you says that it was worth it. That summer my wife went out and bought a bag of hydrogenated lime and ordered, I mean ...suggested that I mix it well into the soil of ...our ...hydrangea. Guess what, she, I mean, we changed the pH of the soil and that year the flowers came out a definite blue. Then, from year to year she, I mean we enjoyed changing the pH just to show off. I don't know of any other plant that this can be done with, although I wouldn't be surprised to find there were others. Any, good luck.
