All living things are created to depend on one another in order to survive. Babies are not able to take care of themselves so they need someone who can feed, teach, nurture and help them grow up to be good citizens because if you abandon them and left them to fend for themselves, I don't think they will live enough to see the world change. But when we grow old, we become helpless again and there are times we may not be able to do even the basic things so we have to rely on other people again to help us get through life. But think beyond that, if while growing up you were able to help a lot of people who, in one time or another, has been dependent to you, why wouldn't you look forward to growing old? You are actually trying to look back and think that in your old age, you have gained a lot of knowledge and experience, then you are a fulfilled person and need not worry that you will become a burden to people helping you on your old age, unless they think other wise. Life is a cycle though so whatever you do in your life, be sure to help out someone and it will be returned to you a hundred fold. Goodluck.

The cycle of birth and aging suggests that we are dependant upon others the most at very young and very old ages.

Become a hamster. They hate other hamsters except at mating and breeding times.
Humans have evolved to be social creatures, since that was the way they survived, and still is.
As for why - no special reason, you might as well ask why a starfish lives and dies.
