They are Great!! They are smarter than dogs and cats and are loads of fun. You just cant keep them in a cage all the time. Than is mean. Only get one if you are very sure it will be interacted with on a daily basis.

They can be, but you have to take the time to train them. While they can live in cages, you must give them at least an hour each day out of the cage for exercise and enrichment. If you keep them as a pet, you'll need to interact with each ferret every day.

Ferrets are NOT rodents, as some people believe. They are related to the weasle and mink. They do smell of musk, even when descented. And they need training.

Before getting a ferret, you need to do some research. Make sure it is legal to own them where you live. California and Hawaii prohibit owing ferrets as pets. In addition, some cities, counties, and local jurisdictions prohibit them. Others jurisdictions require permits, registrations, innoculations, etc.

You should also find out if there is a veterinarian nearby that treats ferrets. I had a problem a couple of weeks ago when my ferret took ill and his regular vet was out of town. It took over an hour for me to find a vet who could treat him.

Here are a couple of good web links with information of ferret ownership:

If there is a ferret club or show in your area, you may want to attend and speak to some ferret owners. The American Ferret Association has a listing of shows on its web site.

They are wonderful pets for the knowledgeable pet owner. Know that they WILL require medical care in their later years and budget about $5,000 per ferret for their medical care throughout their lives. Ferrets with bad habits can be broken like all pets. It's usually the owners that aren't training and handing an animal with poor behavior correctly.

Very simply they are great for some people and totally wrong for others. Read up and try to get some experience with them before you buy. Also consider adopting there are thousands that peopl decide they don't have time for. They are not rodents. They don't chew wood, most don't chew at all. They do have a specific musk smell. And they take a lot of time. Think about it and good luck

the question - and the answer, depend on your character and place of living.
no matter if it is a dog or ferret - if you are not fit to be with a high energy animal - don't take them!. and if you are alone, or come late from work to a 4th floor floor tiny room - it is the same.
so, they can be wonderfull - to certain people. disaster- to others.

I used to have 14. They make wonderful pets; however, they are high maintenance. You do need to keep up with with the cleaning, and most are not easy to potty train.

Depends, they can be cute curious and companionable but they have to be trained and they are related to skunks so sometimes they stink. They also steal things.
