i personally LOVE jim morrison's voice, but i just dislike the doors because they mask his voice with that irritating piano thing, and the other instruments. i know thats what gives the band its 'sound', but it just irritates me that his voice is so subdued in comparison to the background noise. what do you think?

Of all the musicians in the band Morrison had the least amount of talent. The band was that good.
When an engineer moves the lead vocals from the foreground to a less prominent place there are several good reasons:
The lead singer either doesn't like his voice and or has no confidence in it-Hendrix had this problem,T
The "sound" of the group would be better served w/o that right up front lead vocal
and the easy one ,The lead vocalist is not a particularly good singer-such was the case with the early Jim Morrison.
Jim Morrison was charismatic as all hell. but he was not a great singer or a great performer
If you doubt me ,compare him to his some of his contemporaries
Daltry ? Plant ? Cocker ? Sly Stone ? Jagger ?
As a vocalist and a performer , he can't hang with those guys

I'm listening to Waiting for Sun on vinyl and I honestly don't hear the problem that you are referring to.Therefore I have to assume that it's a result of the CD recording process.

how can you call a sound that revolutionized rock noise? Thats an insult. If you like morrison than you should take the time to understand the doors sound because he was a part of that sound. The Doors (this includes morrison you know) melted different sounds and psychodelic rhymes to create the acid trip music that they are know for. You cannot like part of the sound and insult the other, listen carefully to the songs and you will see that his voice is always projected through all of the different sounds. His voice was the main instrument used, never is it subdued/drowned. There is a certain harmony between his voice and the other instruments used, making the music unique, intriguing, sensual and just plain awesome!

It wouldn't be the Doors without the other guys. I agree that Jim Morrison has a great sounding voice (not that he was a technically proficient singer), but what made it sound so great was the raw bluesy quality of the music.

I love the doors. You are right Jim Morrison's voice is great. His lyrics and the way he sings is so awesome to listen to. The keyboard really doesn't bother me.

I am and always have been.

Love her Madly
People are Strange.
Riders on the Storm...etc.

That "irritating" piano thing is "music"...his voice was never 'masked'...recordings of the 60s weren't as electronically generated and over-produced as today.

It was pure.
