You have to think about what goes into value: it has to be useful, desirable, and rare.

Approximately 26,000 kg of diamonds are mined every year, worth about 9 billion dollar altogether. That means each gram of diamond is worth an average of $346. Keep in mind that much of the value of diamond comes from how it is cut - an artistic value rather than a mineral one.

Prices on uranium mining were at about $14 a pound last time I checked, and not a lot higher than that. That's only a fraction of a cent per gram. Part of the reason for this really low price is that although uranium is really dangerous and useful, it is also relatively common.

Rhodium is considered to be the most expensive naturally occurring element on the periodic table. It is extremely rare and found mixed in with other metals. Only about 20 tons are produced annually. In May of 2006, it was selling for about $6200 per troy ounce, which works out to $95,680 per gram.

On the other hand, in 1993 0.2 g of moon rock was sold for $442,500, and its value has only increased since then. That means each gram of moon rock is worth about $2,210,000. There is less than 383 kg of moon rock on the entire earth.

So you can see that moon rock is more valuable than diamond by a factor of about 6000 to 1. If you want to get rich, then go to the moon and bring back a few hundred more kilograms!

It's all a matter of opinion, but here's my 2 cents: I am not a huge mineral makeup fan; however, I find that there is a difference in quality and the type of additives between a cheaper vs. more expensive mineral makeup. It has been my experience that cheaper mineral makeup has higher concentrations of bismuth, this is what gives mineral makeup its diffusing sheen. I also find that the zinc oxide and titanium nano-particles tend to be noticeably larger, and when that is the case, these larger particles tend to settle in lines and pores more often than a higher end mineral makeup that has been made with significantly smaller particles. With a higher end powder mineral makeup, you will find that you use less, and you won't spend nearly as much time buffing it out.

Most Valuable Mineral

Short answer: Natural Alexandrite with strong color change

Long answer: Most expensive would be not a base mineral, but it's gemstone variety. For example, Ruby and Sapphire are gemstone varieties of corundum. Emerald is gemstone variety of beryl.

Taking on account rarity, historical value, sale records I would say that Alexandrite (variety of chrysoberyl) is most expensive mineral. Alexandrite commands a high price exceeding the price of gemstones like, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and diamonds. Good quality alexandrites is extremely rare and top red/green material (rough) can go easily for about $250.000 or more per 1 gr ( 5 ct).

Tanzanite is expensive, followed by some tinted diamonds. But I wouldn't invest in either. Soon we'll be able to synthesise both from cheap raw materials. I'd put my money on one of the platinum group metals with technological uses, like rhodium, ruthenium, osmium, palladium or platinum, or a high melting point element like hafnium.

A diamond, especially when you consider the cost of human lives who toil for a few cents to feed their families at the expense of DeBeers
