It looks like some substance has been thrown on my car, leaving gluey looking marks on the dark grey paint. When these have been cleaned off (only with a special remover) the paint underneath has obvious cracks in it. It looks awful. Do you think this has been done intentionally, or is it an 'accident'?

Brake fluid or naval jelly will do that to car paint. Chances are it was intentional but you never know.

Sounds like paint stripper.

A bloke at cowley wrote Pigs in brake fluid on the doors of some SD1 Rovers to police spec prior to spraying many years ago, Six months later the word appeared through the paint needing new doors and a respray!
Brake fluid, especially brand new brake fluid is a good paint stripper I use it for getting paint off model railway equipment without melting the plastic, and it softens car paint and makes it run and eventually crinkle and crack, Battery acid sort od turns the paint while before dissolveing it so paint stripper, Nitromors original I guess looks most likely
Made any good enemies lately?

sounds intentional thought what kind of substance would do that is a good question, paint stripper is the only thing i can think of that would cause paint to crack like that

Could be a poor paint job when it left the factory, cracking in hot weather. How old is your car? Take it to a body shop garage, they will soon tell you.
