I am sure the book is called 'I am David' though I can't remember the author. He escapes from some kind of camp and walks across Europe looking for his mother. It is one of the best books I have read.

If the book you are talking about is called "I Am David" it is by Ann Holm. The link to the description of the book from Amazon.com is listed below.

from the brief information you have given it sounds like 'The Silver Sword' by Ian Serraillier. I also read this story at secondary school.

I think you might be thinking of "I am David" (can't remember who it's by). Did he start off in Salonika, and head across Europe? I loved that book!

If you can remember Warsaw and The Danube, it was probably the Silver Sword.
