I think the song "Timothy" by the Buoys from the 1970s
(there was some kind of accident and they ended up having to eat the poor guy or sumpin...canibalisim..sad and strange and weird song)

Trapped in a mine all paths caved in
And everyone knows the only ones left
Were Joe and me and Tim
When they broke through to pull us free
The only ones left to tell the tale
WAS Joe and me

Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go?
Timothy, Timothy, God why don't I know?

Hungry as hell no food to eat
And Joe said that he would sell his soul
For just a piece of meat
Water enough to drink TO DRINK for two
And Joe said to me, "I'll TAKE a swig
And then there's some for you."

Timothy, Timothy, Joe was looking at you
Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do?

I must have blacked out just 'round then
'Cause the very next thing that I could see
Was the light of the day again
My stomach was full as it could be
And nobody ever got around
To finding Timothy
Timothy...

If that's more twisted than depressing...then I'll say:

"How do you Mend a Broken Heart"...by the Bee-Gees (also from the 70s)

I can think of younger days when living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do.
I could never see tomorrow, but I was never told about the sorrow.

And how can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?
How can you mend a this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live again.

I can still feel the breeze that rustles through the trees
And misty memories of days gone by
We could never see tomorrow, noone said a word about the sorrow.

Lots of options here.
Metallica's "Fade to Black" rocks, but sounds like it's about suicide.
Lita Ford & Ozzy Osbourne "Close my eyes forever"
Dixie Chicks' "Cold Day in July"
Dixie Chicks' "Without You"
SheDaisy "Come Home Soon"
Lynyrd Skynyrd "Freebird" (Come on, "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?")
Poison "Life Goes On"
Poison "Something to Believe In"

I know you asked for THE saddest song - but these are all good for some tears.

"a replace is Gonna Come" through Sam Cooke that's meant to be uplifting, i think...even if the situations defined interior the music are so harsh...and issues that...nonetheless have not replaced. So, it merely brings me down like the music is hoping for differences that would under no circumstances ensue...even if it may well be eye-catching in the journey that they ever did :(

I forgot what its called, but its something by snow patrol. In my opinion, its the most depressing song ive ever heard. its all about this guy who has a girlfriend that he has to break up with her because she helped him not think bad things (i mean like, suicidal hate) about himself, and he thinks shes too good for her. It's all wonderful.

Painters....by Jewel

Eighty years, an old lady now, sitting on the front porch
Watching the clouds roll by
They remind her of her lover, how he left her, and of times long ago,
When she used color carelessly, painted his portrait
A thousand times - or maybe just his smile -
And she and her canvas would follow him wherever he would go

'Cause they were painters and they were painting themselves
A lovely world

Oil streaked daisies covered the living room wall
He put water colored roses in her hair
He said, "Love, I love you, I want to give you the mountains, the sunshine,
the sunset too
I want to give you everything as beautiful as you are to me

'Cause they were painters and they were painting themselves
A lovely world

So they sat down and made a drawing of their love, an art to live by
They painted every, passion every home, created every beautiful child
in the winter they were weavers of warmth,
in the summer they were carpenters of love
They thought blue prints were too sad so they made them yellow

'Cause they were painters, and they were painting themselves
A lovely world

Until one day the rain fell as thick as black oil
And in her heart she knew something was wrong
She went running
through the orchard screaming,
'No God, don't take him from me!'
But by the time she got there, she feared he already had gone
She got to where he lay, water colored roses in his hands for her
She threw them down screaming, 'Damn you man, don't leave me
with nothing left behind but these cold paintings, these cold portraits
to remind me!'

He said, 'Love I leave, but only a little, try to understand
I put my soul in this life we created with these four hands
Love, I leave, but only a little, this world holds me still
My body may die now, but these paintings are real'
So many seasons came and so many seasons went
and many times she saw he love's face watering the flowers,
talking to the trees and singing to his children,
And when the wind blew, she knew he was listening,
and how he seemed to laugh along, an how he seemed to hold her
when she was crying

'Cause they were painters, and they were painting themselves
A lovely world

Eighty years, an old lady now, sitting on the front porch
Watching the clouds roll by
They remind her of her lover, how he left her, and of times long ago,
When she used color carelessly, painted his portrait
A thousand times - or maybe just his smile -
And she and her canvas would follow him wherever he would go
Yes, she and her canvas still follow

Because they are painters and they are painting themselves
A lovely world

Hey You by Pink Floyd

It makes me want to cry.

The feeling of desperation, that no one cares for you anymore, that it's you against the world.

"Hey you, out there in the cold
Getting lonely, getting old,
Will you touch me?
Hey you, standing in the aisle
With itchy feet and fading smiles
Will you touch me?"

Anyone at all will do, just give me attention! I need it... I'm desperate for it...

The worms are coming...

The buffalo and his brother,
Were lying in the sand.
Said the buffalo to his brother,
"What makes you lie that way"
But the buffalo did not answer,
The buffalo, he was dead.
Since wa-ay, last Ma-ay...
and he's deteriorated.

This is a song that I heard in my childhood. Wish I could give you the tune. It devastates me to this day. Why did my mother sing it to me?
