Sims 2 is not a network game, so it cannot be played online.
However there is a sims game that can and it is free to try.
Free trial for the ONLINE version of the game, called "Sims Online". It is a completely different game with graphics more like Sims 1. After the free trial it costs you a monthly fee to keep your membership.

You cannot play sims 2 via the internet, it is not multiplayer.
Even if it should be.
