This line is from the Bible and was a statement by Jesus Christ. He was trying to show the difference between the spiritual and physical world. That in the world things might seem to work in a certain way but that God is able to change the order of things and make them work His way. We would expect that normally, aggressive people will be the winners take all and be the ones who have their way. That is what is evident in the world scheme of things with genocides, wars etc as you have mentioned. But God is able to over-turn the scales and make the men of gentleness and humility winners. Remember Ghandi, Mandela???? Also after judgment people will realise that it was not the violent, wicked, oppressive and aggressive that came out best. God will overturn the tables and those who were meek and humble in Christ will be given everything while those who were not will be found gnasing their teeth.

Meek means submissive to authority, or humbly obedient. The phrase "the meek shall inherit the earth" means that obedience is a virtue that brings unbounded prosperity. In other words, it's a contemptible lie. The lampoon meaning of the phrase is that the meek will be used and disposed of when their usefulness is ended, and the only thing they will "inherit" is the dirt (or "earth") under their grave marker. The lampoon meaning is more accurate than the original one.

I think the meek are neither evil or pure. Lukewarm as Jesus put it. So they won't be taken up in the rapture, or judged and sent to hell, just left to dwell on earth in exile. Hopefully to teach the next generation the lessons that weren't learned by the previous a$$holes. Just a bunch of sturdy people able to survive on their own, and start over, with out hatred for God or a love or lust for evil. But you can bet you a$$ there will be a bunch of reefer being grown all over the planet. That's what will insure that they will stay meek.

It's a metaphorical statement and doesn't literally mean they'll inherit squat. Obviously, the only earth the meek are going to inherit is the dirt that goes over them in their graves.

The meek who will inherit the earth are not wimps, quite the contrary. They may turn the other cheek when that is situationally appropriate, but they will not be afraid to take up arms to fight for Right and Justice, or to protect a way of life that treats all persons with dignity and respect.
The meek are those who seem to decrease, to feel smaller, as they open themselves more and more to the hugeness of creation, the magnificence of daily life (babies, bees, butterflies), and the inestimable worth of each person with whom they come in contact.
As their Self or Ego shrinks, they actually gain in power - the power to see clearly, to understand, to comprehend, to act with wisdom, to do the best for all affected by the challenge or problem at hand, to lead, to protect (not only life but all the resources at hand), to be filled with compassion and to act upon it efficiently and effectively.

In the New Testament context, I believe this would be a reference
to the nature and character of Him who decides whether anyone
goes to heaven, the Lord Jesus Christ. In the Old Testament context, it would refer to the character/characteristics of a Man-of-God, such as Moses, a type of Christ.
NOTE: Meek does NOT mean weak, but is power under control.
See below:
Matthew 5:5 (KJV)
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (Words of Jesus)
Matthew 11:29 (KJV)
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Matthew 21:5 (KJV)
Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an a__, and a colt the foal of an a__.
O.T. :
Zephaniah 2:3 (KJV)
Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD's anger.
Numbers 12:3 (KJV)
Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.

The meek are those who turn the other cheek.
Christ said when somebody slaps you, turn the other cheek, rather than fight back.
The meek shall inherit the earth -- but probably not while the powerful and hostile are still alive.

The meek are the people who have acted humbly and served God without fanfare, or at a great price to their own health or well-being, without complaining.

The passage is alluding to the fact that it will not be a man's strength that grants him eventual mastery over the earth. Rather it will be by humbly submitting to God's will that we will be lifted up. This has not happened yet, but it will some day.
