The first thing to do is go here and run an Online scan. Some Malware can block or interfere with the download of AV and AS programs once you are infected. Do this first and get as much off as you can.

You can use this procedure with any Anti-Virus or Anti-Spy program.

You do not need to buy an AV or AS programs. There are many free programs that work as well and better than many Pay programs.

AVG or AVAST are both excellent AV programs and are Free. Choose and use only one AV program. You can download from this safe download site.

Anti-Spy programs are different. You should have more than one. I recommend you have at least three providing active real time protection. All are Free.

I would also recommend you keep the AdAware SE, CW Shredder, from above procedure, on your computer and use them for regular scans. They do not run full time.

Ewido is considered the best Trojan remover available. It has a 30 free trial in which it provides Active, real time protection. At the end of the 30 days it stops providing the Active protection, but, can still be updated manually and used to scan your computer. You can download it from the FileHippo site also.

The best anti virus is zonealarm, its about £20-25 but its great, also adaware is very good for pop ups and spam, and best of all its free.
Windows itself has its own pop up blocker too, its in security settings (xp) Also make sure you have windows firewall turned on.

There really is only one way to solve that problem. You need to format your hard drive and reinstall windows. Then install any software you use from the original CDs. Because windows is so insecure at the most basic levels, there is no way to stop destructive code in any reliable fashion....making it necessary to occassionally nuke your machine and rebuild it.
