For straight colonial history, I'd recommend The Unredeemed Captive by John Demos, Dearest Friend (a biography of Abigail Adams) by Lynne Withey, and Revolutionary Mothers by Carol Berkin.

If you think you might enjoy some historical fiction of the period, check into Drums Along the Mohawk by Walter D. Edmonds or Northwest Passage by Kenneth Roberts.

i would recommend that just for fun you find the book that was about U.S. History by Jon Stewart of the Daily Show. It's hysterical and after reading all them facts and dates in the books others will recommend you're gonna need a good laugh.

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown is an interesting account of the basic principles upon which this great superpower is based.

Longman's Chronichle of American History. I have their chronicles of the world and twentieth century, both excellent. They also do a chronicle of the French Revolution. Ask your local WH Smith's if they can order it for you.

Walt Whitman's "Song Of Myself". It's actually a poem but if you read it, it speaks volumes on the American ideal of a new nation and cultural melting pot, leading to define what it actually means to be "American".
