It's a way for web pages to react to user input once a page has been downloaded. A basic web page without any javascript acts like a piece of paper, you cant modify it or react to it, you just look at it. Javascript allows for developers to build hooks into actions a person may take after downloading a page. Like if i click on a box, something drops down, etc.
