crooked number
A number other than a zero or a one, referring to the appearance of the actual number. A team which is able to score two or more runs in an inning is said to "hang a crooked number" on the scoreboard or on the pitcher.

It means that a picher did not put together a scoreless half inning (the term usually used that the pitcher has given up number of runs in one inning more than 1 or 2). The number 0 itself is round and any other numbers has angles in it an therfore is crooked, except for 8 since it is the snowman of numbers. (They probably say that the pitcher was shelled for 8 runs in that instance)

1 is a straight number, get it? Although 11 is pretty straight....

It means more runs than hits. There are situations where a team will score more runs than the number of hits they have. This is a crooked number.

I have always heard it as any inning with more than one run. Two is better than one. Three is better than 1 and etc.
