dragonflies, as adults consume mosquito`s and gnats, a useful service to mankind. Dragonfly larvae, or nymphs spend their pre-adult lives in water, where they feed on other insects, small fish, and other smallish aquatic creatures. They in turn are eaten by larger fish and amphibeans. Gnats, midges and mosquitos are eaten by a large variety of fish, as both adults and larvae. Birds - swallows, martins, swifts, wagtails, flycatchers, wrens (to name a few). Bats will include `stingers` in their diet, as do lizards, toads and frogs .Being on the lower rung of the food chain. and being on the menu of so many higher predators means that `stingers` breed in vast numbers . The worst possible place for midges is scenic Scotland, where at dusk, along the beautiful wooded hillsides and lochs, vast swarms of biting midges drive all before them.

The purpose of a dragonfly is to look nice flying over a pond or lake.
The purpose of midges is to annoy tourists, so that they go away and leave the locals in peace.

the dragonfly is a magnificent creature even if it does nothing as an adult, but believe me it's nymph stage keeps pondlife in check. Midges are fodder for other insects and most birds. What is our, human, purpose then? Such arrogance to assume we are supreme in nature's scheme. We're not. We're part, not the whole.

They're food in the near-bottom of the food chain. And dragonfly nymphs are carnivorous while still living in the water. They can be annoying but they are a piece of the puzzle.
