Definitely good. If they smoked inside it wouldn't be good, and if they didn't hold the baby it wouldn't be good. Don't be paranoid.

I also have a five month old and I am a smoker. What I do is go outside with my "smoking jacket" I put that on only when I'm smoking, and it stays by the front door. When I come back in, I wash my hands and hold the baby, which is not harmful at all. If anyone is smoking with long hair, it also helps to tie your hair back, I don't really know why, but that's what the doctor told me. If your in-laws are not doing this, politely tell them to, shouldn't be a problem

There are so many opinions on this subject and here is what I think and why.

I think that smoking around the baby is worse than smoking outside bringing it in on the clothes. I would rather they smoke outside and then hold my baby then smoke while holding my baby. My husband is a smoker and smokes outside and there is nothing wrong with my daughter other than having a little day care cold. Her immune system is healthy and she has never had a cold until 7 months when she started day care.

Yes smokers smell like smoke and IT OFFENDS PEOPLE but as long as they are smoking out side I think things will be fine with your baby.

I would ask them to wash their hands when they come back in, at the very least. The smoke smell and the toxins from the cigarettes can be on their hands and definitely gets trapped in their clothes. I would also think about having them keep a "smoking shirt" at your house that they put on when smoking outside and take off when they come back in. That way, when they hold the baby after they come back in, the smell and toxins will not still be on them. My husband smoked when our youngest was first born, and we had him do this. He has since quit smoking, but this is not an option for everyone. However, you can insist that people who hold your infant follow your rules at your home. Cigarette smoke has been linked strongly to the cause of childhood asthma, so anything you can do to prevent this is great for your child.

Second hand smoke is very bad for anybody. Even if they do not smoke around the baby, the smoke is absorbed by the hair, clothes and on the breath of the people who smoke. Ask them to wash their hands at least before the hold baby. You can't ask them not to smoke, or not allow them to hold the baby unfortunately. Just tell them your concerns about the affects of second hand to your child. Good Luck.

My doctor told my husband that when he comes back inside from smoking he needs to wash his hands and change his shirt. At such a young age it isnt all about the smoke itself, when the smoke scent is on a person it can take the baby's breathe away and since the lungs arent prepared to filter out that smell it's like a suffocating smell to them. Now if you had a toddler I would agree that it's the smoke itself but not with a baby this young. I am pregnant and the scent of his smoke takes MY breath away at times and I have to move away from him for fresh air so imagine your childs reaction to this.

I don't think it would hurt anything as long as they aren't smoking right around the baby. If they go outside, and then come in and wash their hands before they hold the baby then it should be fine.

I have two kids and another on the way. We don't smoke, or allow it in our house, however, my father-in-law smokes. He goes outside to smoke, and is very careful of the wind blowing. He washes his hands before he held either of our babies, and all of this with out even asking. He doesn't want to do anything to put the babies in harms way.
We don't have a problem with this, and neither of the babies smelt of smoke after he held them.

Jesus people, they are smoking outside. The smell is not going to hurt them. My parents smoked outside, then came inside. My kids are fine. I think strong perfume is just as bad, but would you tell people they can't hold the baby because of their perfume? Let them bond with their grandchildren.
