My answer: Egg first, because what laid it was not quite a chicken.
The basis of your question is the process and mechanics of evolution. A lot of people have got it right (more or less), but for a readable account of an actual case study, I refer you to the source below. It is nonsense to say (as others have here) that there is no proof of evolution. They would have you believe that the Earth is only 5000 years old!

Now, this could also be a question refering to philosophy.
What came first, the chicken or the egg will probably be answered souly on beliefs.
If your into religieon, you would probably like to think that the chicken came first as god crated all life on the planet.
If your a scientist, the egg came first, because the egg is the development stage it is fair to assume most changes happened within the egg at the time thats including evolution and the development of chickens.

Obviously the egg came before the chicken. Dinosaur eggs existed millions of years before chickens ever showed up :)

Neither came first, because a chicken (as we know it today) slowly evolved from previous life, and it's eggs follwed suit.
There is no first, because the line between Chickens and it's genetic ancestors is not that distinct, since species are defined by the ability to procreate. Also, today's chickens are very slightly genetically different then chicken's from 1000 years ago and future chickens, so you'd have to define more closely what you mean by chicken and egg.

something that was very much like the chicken, but not exactly like todays chicken, a genetic mutation took place to make the think in the egg into a chicken instead of what came before

The chicken or the egg is a reference to the causality dilemma which arises from the expression "which came first, the chicken or the egg?". Since both the chicken and the egg create the other in certain circumstances (a chicken emerges from an egg; an egg is laid by a chicken) it is ambiguous which originally gave rise to the other. Purely logical attempts to resolve the dilemma result in an infinite regress, since an egg was caused by a chicken, which was caused by an egg, etc. Since every chicken originates from its egg, it seems obvious the egg came first. Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life. The solution may require an examination of syntax and may rely on verification from advances in modern genetic science. When used in reference to difficult problems of causality, the chicken and egg dilemma is often used to appeal to the futility of debate and lay it to rest.

The chicken was here first. God created everything unto itself.
The Book of Genesis tells us that everything was created by God—nothing "evolved." Every creature was given the ability to reproduce after its own kind as is stated ten times in Genesis. Dogs do not produce cats. Neither do cats and dogs have a common ancestry. Dogs began as dogs and are still dogs. They vary in species from Chihuahuas to Saint Bernards, but you will not find a "dat" or a "cog" (part cat/dog) throughout God’s creation. Frogs don’t reproduce oysters, cows don’t have lambs, and pregnant pigs don’t give birth to rabbits. God made monkeys as monkeys, and man as man.
Each creature brings forth after its own kind. That’s no theory; that’s a fact. Why then should we believe that man comes from another species? If evolution is true, then it is proof that the Bible is false. However, the whole of creation stands in contradiction to the theory of evolution.
Dr. Kent Hovind of Florida has a standing offer of $250,000 to "anyone who can give any empirical evidence (scientific proof) for evolution." Evolution— true science fiction. His website is www.drdino.com.

dinosaurs were laying eggs long before the chicken was scratching inside its daddy's testes. The egg came from an evolved dinosaur, probably an archeopteryx (sp?)

Probably some aliens decided to have an experiment in the early years. Made this thing called an "egg". Watched what happened and presto!
