In America the polynomial long division is done by this way:
http://www.purplemath.com/modules/polydiv2.htm
but in my country the format is different:
the polynomia who should be divided appears in the left-hand and the polynomial who is divided appears in the right hand. Also the quotient appear under the this last polynomial.
Does this approach change anything?

right David: i mean the divisor is on the right hand)

I can't get a clear picture of the method you learned in your country, because you've described both polynomials as the one being divided. However, I'd say that if you were taught a different method, as long as it is valid, it should give you the same result every time, and changes nothing about the answer you get.

An iterative 4-step approach (that's lengthy, even with the indisputable fact that it continually works) (iterative = fancy note for: a loop that you repeat till you're complete) (4x^3 + 6x^2 + 16x – 10) / (-x^2 – 2x – 5) step a million: Take the optimal degree time period from the numerator (4x^3) and divide it through the optimal degree time period from the denominator (-x^2) 4x^3 / -x^2 = -4x step 2: Multiply this answer (-4x) through the denominator - careful with indicators: (-4x)(-x^2 - 2x - 5) = 4x^3 + 8x^2 + 20x step 3: subtract this outcome from the numerator - be even extra careful with indicators: (4x^3 + 6x^2 + 16x – 10) - (4x^3 + 8x^2 + 20x) = -2x^2 - 4x - 10 step 4: Summarize what you've so some distance: (4x^3 + 6x^2 + 16x – 10) / (-x^2 – 2x – 5) = -4x with a relax of -2x^2 - 4x - 10 Repeat the loop with the the relax: (-2x^2 - 4x - 10) / (-x^2 – 2x – 5) step a million: -2x^2 / -x^2 = +2 step 2: 2(-x^2 – 2x – 5) = -2x^2 - 4x - 10 step 3: (-2x^2 - 4x - 10) - (-2x^2 - 4x - 10) = 0 No the relax! step 4: (4x^3 + 6x^2 + 16x – 10) / (-x^2 – 2x – 5) = -4x + 2 No the relax, so we quit. very last answer -4x + 2

are you talking about something like

If so, then this is what is know as Sythetic Division and not Long Division, but the both work basically the same way.

When someone asks me to do long division, i use synthetic division, because its easier to write.

Differences in methodologies don't change the results. Mathematics are universal.
