Phillip Seymore Hoffman, Juilanne Moore and too many other famous people to name!!! I think the movie is from 1999; i really love this movie!!! They usually play it on the Independant Film Channel. My question is, If you have seen the movie.....Do you think Tom Cruise's character paralells his own real-life personality???? I mean, in the movie, he has this interview and it reminds me so much of his interview with Oprah.....maybe he was just replaying his role from the movie????

Magnolia is one of my all time faveorite films. I read somewhere that Paul Thomas Anderson (The Director) Wrote the part of Frank TJ Mackey (Cruise's character) with Tom in mind. What this says about his real life personae is debatable, but there are undeniable parallels. Not least of which is the fact that Tom was abandoned by his father and left solely in his mothers care. It is easy to raed alot into this but I suppose the dysfunctional celebrity family unit could be a pattern that is seen throughout Hollywood, and I doubt that Cruise was unique in his troubled youth.

I saw it, I liked it. But while I understand what you're saying about Cruise, I think it's a whole different flavor of crazy. His character in the film was a tremendous mysognist (don't feel like looking up the spelling there). He had major issues with women. Cruise does not. He has major issues, to be sure, but that's more about reality as a whole. And because he's probably an undiagnosed Manic Depressive who needs meds.

Basically, Cruise is probably a nice, well meaning guy, who is prone to being super moody and irrational. His Magnolia character was a cruel, jaded bastard.

Tom Cruise was interviewed by James Lipton (Inside the Actors Studio) and James asked him directly if the character was based on his life. Tom Cruise denied 100%.

I agree, Magnolia is a good movie. I love movies where it begins as separate stories but the director links the characters together. Another movie like that is Crash, also a very good film! Another one is 28 Grams. Check them out if you haven't alredy :-)
