A T1 is usually 1.544 megabits per second. Your DSL is only equivalent to a T1 if it s 1.544Mbps both up and down.

Short answer: T1has a line bit rate of 1544000 bit/s seconds, but that is in both directions (i.e 1.54Mbs upload, and 1.54MBs download at the same time)
The average DSL service can provide roughly a similar download bit rate as T1, but rarely a similar upload bit rate as a T1.

More Detailed Answer: The phone companies have their own network to carry voice phone calls. A phone call is sampled 8000 times a second at 8 bits, making each phone call 64,000 bits of info. To make it easier to handle, 24 of these 64kbit voice channels are muxed to form a T1 which with overhead and framing bits has a rate of 1544000 bits per second (or 1.5Mb/s). T1 is also known as DS1.

It is possible to lease a T1 line from a phone company and carry data instead of voice, and that's how many companies get their internet service. It is possible to subscribe to a T1 service that is extremely robust and reliable, as much as 99.9%. It is common to see contracts where if the customer experiences say 10 seconds of outage a month, then the whole month will be free.

The other big difference between ADSL and T1, is that T1 can provide a symmetrical service, meaning the download bit rate and the upload bitrate will both be 1.5Mbs all the time, and at the same time. This is an important distinction.

ADSL is by definition asymmetrical, meaning most often the upload speed is significantly lower than the download speed. Furthermore the bit rate you are quoted is the bit rate on the actual line, and not the actual bit rate that you can use for data.
For example an ADSL modem may take your ethernet packet, and break it up into ATM cells of 53 bytes each, and transport those over the line. An ATM cell has 5 bytes of overhead, so just this step has eaten up some 10 per cent of available bandwidth.
A T1 carrying ethernet could use more efficient formatting and would waste less bits in overhead.

Not necessarily, T1 is1.544 Mb/s. DSL comes in several speeds. 384Kb/s to at least 5Mb/s (that's what I have). Hope this helps.

T1 connections usually run at 10Mbits/sec.

DSL is somewhat slower!

Have fun but be safe!
