I’ll admit this is for class. I couldn’t think of anything else to add so I hoped that others would have ideas that I haven’t had. Thanks to those who answered seriously. You’ve helped me out a lot.

It's actually very clever. Self-evident implies that the truth of something is so apparent that we need not debate it. We look at this thing and we simply know that it's true.

Self-evident truths....wonder how many there truly are...

Not ALL 'truths' are 'self-evident', therefore to emphasize the basic truth of life, in fact, man's basic instinct....is to decrease pain and increase pleasure (minus the 'by the Creator' phrase), ...all else is lost to oblivion.

You might ask, why state the obvious? The simple answer is that all men do not acknowledge a simple truth, especially when 'their' truths were that man was not created equal, that some are slaves of others, etc. At their time, of course, they weren't thinking of slaves (who were considered property) but their own plight before ol King George III of England

Notice that "we hold" influences the sentence to mean,"self-evident TO US, all men LIKE US, pursuit of what makes US happy, the Creator according to the way WE interpret God as not divinely appointing Kings."

Kelly T your a joke. Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Wow how many southern land owners didn't own slaves. Hey Kelly did you know that Jefferson included lots of anti slavery in the consitution but it was taken out by the congress? Thomas Jefferson was one of the greatest American politicians. his writing should be a standard that we should all try to emmulate.
Self evident I guess it means " we know" thats my best interpretation. that phrase is one of those phrases where you know whats being said without knowing what the words mean.

Because he believed these things to be something everyone knows in the very fiber of their beings, beliefs that we are essentially born with. That a person has a right and duty to protect himself/herself and his/her loved ones could also be a self evident truth. It's not something you have to be told,it's something you simply know,no explanation is required. Anything more than that is not needed to explain in my opinion.

Because not all truths are self-evident. We, as humans, have to seek out the truths of the world. They will not be handed to us on a silver platter. It is through the journey of education that we find truths, and come closer to a state of enlightened freedom from opressive and easily led ignorance.

IMO the term self-evident was used to put more emphasis on it because the rights to life, freedom and happiness can be proven logically as well.
