Personally, I can't stand Wal-mart. I'd much rather pay a little more and go to a smaller store, but Wal-mart is running all the little Mom & Pop businesses out of our town - they can't compete. We live in a small city, so they're the only game in town...it makes me sick!! I saw on TV a few weeks ago where they built a Wal-mart just outside of Nashville, TN right over an Indian burial ground. They didn't realize it until they started breaking ground, but once they realized it they wouldn't even let the residents exhume and rebury the remains elsewhere. I couldn't believe that they could be that insensitive!!!

It's understandable why people like shopping at Wal-Mart...there's no doubt that it's much, much cheaper - and with money being so tight these days - who can blame people for looking to pay for things as cheaply as possible? However - if a few extra bucks to shop in a ma & pa store is within your budget - you should really consider it. I urge you to read the Wikipedia article on "Criticism of Wal-Mart" - linked below - and think about the effect on your community as a whole via your support of Wal-Mart.

Indie places are more expensive because they're not corporately sponsored like Wally-World. Try to shop at mom and pops. Those have a higher overhead because they're trying to pay the bills. And definitely more helpful. Stick with the indie places if you can.
