Does it continue to run at all after releasing the key to the on position? If not have it checked for a burnt fusible link. This is a wire that acts as a fuse in that it is meant to burn in two if an over current is pulled for any reason. Sometimes they will break very near the starter relay on the fender well by the battery. You can locate the one end on the smaller terminal on the relay, following the wire and there should most times be a small rubber knob around the wire with identifying amp mark. if you feel down the wire at the burnt location it will be hard inside the casing with a gap felt. If this is the case a mechanic should be use since the wire is routed through the firewall to the inside of the car. Although as a temporary fix you could split the wire at the burnt location and twist together with the use of a wire nut, making sure that not to leave any exposed medal of the wire. This is ONLY temporary to get the truck to the mechanic. Good luck

Here's a possibility that hasn't been covered. If the engine starts and runs for a second after cranking but dies the moment you release the ignition key you may have a burnt out ignition ballast resistor.
When cranking the engine the ballast resistor is automatically switched out of the ignition circuit and the ignition coil works on whatever low voltage the battery can supply while cranking. Thus the engine fires.
When you release the key the ballast resistor goes back into the circuit to protect the ignition coil from overcurrent. If this resistor is burnt out, there will be no power to the coil. I'm not all that familiar with Fords but the same thing happened with a friend's old Chrysler several years ago.
On the Chrysler the ballast resistor was beside the ignition coil. If you can find it measure the resistance with a multimeter. You may have to disconnect one end to get a correct reading. Infinite resistance? Resistor burnt out.

If this ford has a brain module on the drivers fender under the hood that is most likely were you will find your problem.If it went to missing and running rough before it stopped running then this is a probable cause.they are also known to cause a loud back firing noise.Make sure you have fuel pressure to the carb or injection system.If it is fuel injected make sure you have proper fuel delivery and pressure.if that's good and no spark depending on what year model you have you may need to have a certified repair shop look at it for you.This would be cheaper in the long run than replacing parts your not sure of the problem

Isolate the problem between the fuel and ignition systems. Gas engines need 3 things.... fuel, air, and ignition. Now, when it starts to die, spray starting fluid in the air box. If the engine continues to run, you have a fuel problem. If it dies like always, then you have an ignition problem. If flames shoot out the intake or tailpipe, the timing chain has slipped. This is all I can do without more info. Good luck.

You didn't specify the year of your truck. But I do agree with the post suggesting the fuel pump or ignition module as POSSIBLE causes.

first what year are we talking about if it is carburated or fuel injected make a world of difference on how you go about diagnosising the problem please either post a year or email me with the info and will be glad to give you a god dianostic procedure to follow

your problem is in the gas tank, you need to clean it out, it has a lot of rust in it that you need to clean out all the rust is clogging up the pick-up line, I hope this helps, It happened to me
