they grow dull in sound and dont sound as good. the continual tunning eventually stretches the strings which mess up the harmonics but this probably isnt as noticable. also making it more likely to snap a string. also if you look under the strings where they meet the frets you will notice they wear away. -cool keep jammin.

Frayed strings. Also, not being able to keep the guitar in tune because the strings are not tight. Generally, this might be a problem with the guitar, unless it's happening to several strings at once.

It's time for new guitar strings when you feel that the tone of your guitar will be better if strings are changed. There is no fixed period of how long guitar strings take to degenerate to the point where they need to be changed. It all depends on the type of strings you are using, your way of playing, and what type of tone you desire. New strings generally produce a livelier, brighter sound. Rock players may change their strings more often than jazz players who prefer a mellower tone.

First of all, is it an electric or Acoustic (Steel or nylon sring?). You will know when you can see the strings wearing out at the fret marks, or if your fingers do not slide easily up and down. Also, run you palm up or down the full length of your strings....if you come back with 6 black lines on your hand, it is time to change them. As you become more accustomed to playing, you will be able to hear and feel when they need to be replaced. For a person who plays up to an hour a day, ususally change them between 6 and 12 months.

Well...I buy new ones when the old ones are too worn out to make a beautiful sound...like when you have to tune the guitar higher to make the strings sound newer...that's when you need to buy new guitar strings...when the olds ones start getting rusty and cutting your fingers...that's when you need to buy new guitar strings!

When you lose tone and also, when it goes out of tune easily! I use Dean Markley strings and they seen to go a little longer if you wipe the strings down after using!

This is kind of like asking how you know when it is time to clean your kitchen counter top.

The simple answer is when they been to sound "dead". As time moves on your strings will loose their brightness. It all boils down to how much tolerance you have for dead sounding strings.

when they sound bad and tuning doesnt help, if they're frayed, if they're worn, if they break. in short, if they sound good and r still attached use 'em.
