The reason that ESPN likes the big name teams is because these teams are what everyone talks about. When was the last time you had a conversation about the Arizona Diamondbacks? My point is nobody cares about small teams, or even many expansion teams. Baseball is a game of tradition and tradition is New York, Chicago, and Boston.

Like an earlier post said, it has to do with ratings. Fans all over the country watch and follow the Sox and Yanks, while the Astros' fan base is extremely regional. The Yanks will draw numbers in any market, and the same isn't true of the Astros.
The Dodgers get a fair amount of airtime, but the west coast in general doesn't get as many games broadcast because of the time difference. I don't think it's a bias so much as a realistic view of how to handle the creation of a TV schedule.

you obviously dont watch espn much do you buddy. the only thing that has been talked about on things like cold pizza and espnews are those divisonal rivalries in the national league, and the wild card race. the dodgers and padres, the cards-astros-reds race.... and then the phillies fighting in the wild card. oh yeah then you got the twins and the tigers tied for the american league central with 3 games to go... and if the tigers lose that it could be the biggest end of the season blowup since the angels....then california i think blew like a 13 game lead or something crazy in the last few months of the season to the mariners back in 1995. watch some tv....learn something

I agree with you that way too much is made of the Yankees-Red Sox supposed rivalry. That rivalry has been invented over the last couple decades by the media in order to increase viewership. And it probably works around here. (I live in Connecticut.) But it really isn't much of a rivalry when one of the teams has one the division title every year for the last 9 years. And it didn't make much sense before that, when one team had won dozens of world championships, and the other went from 1918 to 2004 without winning any. Some rivalry!
Oh, the answer to your question: They think that's what their listeners want to hear about.

I totally agree with you. I'm a Yankee fan but it seems that they always seem to focus on the AL East race or the goings on of the Yankees and Red Sox. The best race in baseball is the NL Central which could come down to the final game and a historic collapse. They should focus more on other games or offer a ESPN local type of thing.

First of all, ESPN is most biased towards the Yankees and focuses on the Red Sox wherever possible.
Secondly, they spend as little time with baseball as they can once football season starts. If I didn't get a regional sports network, I'd be driven insane by ESPN.

Because ESPN is brilliant enough to understand ratings, unlike yourself. No one but people in Houston care about the Astros, but fans nationwide care about the Yankees and Boston and want to see them do well or fail.
The Dodgers actually get alot of ESPN air time, as well, especially Nomar Garciaparra.

Because when you have an owner that has more money than GOD you get what you want. What kills me is that after we are subjected to yet another yank/sox game in "real" time they re-play the damn thing at 2am!!!!!!!!

i agree for example the only times when u see the highlights from the phillies is when ryan howard is at bat (doseent matter if he goes 0-4) I believe they do that cuz most people has interests in those teams than others (so like someone said: raitings).
