I am also studying the field of disability. Have you thought about looking at the families of the children. Are they coping? What are their unmet needs? Does having a child with a disability have an impact on any other children that they have? If the child has a physical disabilities - is the physical work of lifting etc affecting the parent's health (back pain etc).

By working with the families, it will also be simpler to gain any ethics approval as you would not be working with children with disabilities.

Good luck!

Look into children with disabilities whose first language is not english. Especially those that have language related disabilities. I used to work as a disabilities specialist for Head start and it was always a battle to get ESL kids into the school district programs. It was like "of course they are behind in language development--they're learning english!" They never took us very seriously. Things that were supposed to take less than 30 days would take months and months.

You need to think of something that really interests you. I can throw out ideas, but it helps to have something you are passionate about. I have two children with mild disabilities (in the grand scheme of things) - ADHD and Celiac Disease (Wheat Gluten Intolerance). For me, finding a way to teach my ADHD child some coping and organizational skills would be helpful. Then kids with Celiac Disease can have trouble with school lunch rooms to birthday parties and how that impacts them. My son (5 y/o) has to have his own food and cake at any party he goes to. Right now it doesn't really affect him, but what about in 5 years when he's 10 and he's at a party with his own food?
