I change it up. I like to use both. Using slang can be disarming and can help ensure people know you aren't being mean when teasing. It can convey passivity. Sometimes slang isn't appropriate, just as proper english can come across as snobby at other times. Instead of trying to 'get it right' I aim to communicate my message in the best way. I even make up words all the time.

I live in Kentucky; every "ing" word is "in'"! That's too funny!
Talkin', fishin', bowlin', huntin', goin', walkin', rasslin', drivin', drinkin', shoppin', workin', singin', eatin', listenin' etc. I say all my "ing" words like that!
