My question is this; why do we as a sex strive so hard to achieve the impossible ideals set for us by society? What is it that makes us think that we can have the tight bodies, shiny full hair, beautiful skin, and outrageous warbrobes celebs have stylists, nutritionists, personal trainers, makeup artists, hairstylists, etc for? Also, why can't so many people just be happy with what we have? Finally, what part do men play in the fight to achieve true "beauty"?

I personally, am quite happy and sure of myself, but there are many who aren't and I think it's sad.

Too many women have bought into the society's conditioning that how they look is what's most important. A lot of people make a lot of money convincing women of this. Men can buy into it, too--they can believe their self-worth is based on how beautiful others think "their" woman is.
Once women believe that how they look is very important, there's a lot of temptation to alter their natural appearance, even if it's dangerous to do that.
Let's not be too hard on women who fall into this trap. Society isn't exactly egalitarian, and if women can use their appearance to get more of what they want in life, it's not hard to understand why they want to do that.

I don't feel I strive for the "ideal self", I actually go out in public at least 3 or 4 times a week with out makeup. But I agree with you not everybody it like that. I can't stand it when a girl can't even go to the grocery store with out makeup on.

because everyone (men and women) strive off of their looking glass self, which means we judge ourselves based on how others perceive us, which is ridiculous. i really like this question. and i agree, women are more subjective to society's perception of what females should look like.
