I have 2 very large tatoos in progress that I have been working on for the last 2yrs. I use the same artist every time since they are his wonderful works of art. I am 8wks pregnant and want to continue my regular work on these pieces. Is it safe? I am not worried about the cleanliness or anything like that. But is there any other issues to worry about?

I plan to consult with the doctor on my next visit, just wanting a heads up!

Just to clarify the tattoos are in spots that would not be affected by my "body changing" ie: My lower half of my left leg and my entire back.

This artist is a very close and long time friend of mine and my husbands and would never take any chance of harming my child. I would only consider having work done in the first 4 months.

I understand that you trust this tattoo artist and the cleanliness of his tools, but the truth is that you never know for sure. If you have to ask if it's safe, then that means it probably isn't. If there is any doubt in your mind, you should not go through with it. Plus, when I was pregnant my body transformed is so many ways...your tattoo could look like a mess if you get it while your skin is stretched out (it stretches all over, not just on your belly).

Personally, I wouldn't and the artist/shop you use may not even allow it. Exposing yourself to that kind of pain creates a stress on your body (even if you like it!) that you may not want to impose on your baby. Also, your body is changing; I would wait until after the baby was born just to ensure that the designs you've put so much time into come out right. They're going to be there forever, so what's the hurry? Also, some pregnant women discover that they are sensitive to things they could easily tolerate before they were pregnant... you never know if you might have a reaction to the ink or something just because your body is in a different state than you're used to.

I had a large tattoo done on the small of my back when I was about 6 months pregnant. This was back in 1994, though, and I was only 20 years old. Nothing bad happened to my or my child, but, if I were you, I would ask the doctor the next time you go.

I accompanied a friend to a tattoo parlor when I was pregnant and I asked the artist out of curiosity and he told me that no artist would tattoo a pregnant woman. I'm sure some would, but I wouldn't take the chance. You never know what could happen.

I think it's best to wait until you have the baby. Your body goes through so many changes and you want the tattoo to look right. Also, even though you arent worried about the cleanliness of the place you use, better safe than sorry.

You run the risk of getting an infection that could threaten the life of your unborn child. An infection would be the best of a bad scenario.

I vote for waiting until after you have the child, spend the next seven months getting to know the life within you, get the tatto finished later.

Usually tattoo artists will not tattoo pregnant women.

As far as I have heard, it is not recommended. Any great stress put on the woman (and therefore the developing fetus) can be dangerous.
