how can you tell a girl garter snake from a boy garter snake????????

i have a garter snake and i don't know what to name it because i cood name it a boy name wen it's a girl

the only sure way to tell is to "pop" them or probe them, both of which is something that should only be done by someone who really knows what they're doing. Unless you plan to breed him, it's not worth the undue stress and risk of injuring him... Just choose a name, you'll never know either way, and I doubt the snake will care (he'll never hear his name anyway)

Female snakes are usually larger than males but without knowing the age of your snake and having a male/female snake of the same age to compare it to, it's difficult to tell.

Only a veterinarian, or someone specialized in breeding snakes, can "sex" a snake and tell you what gender it is by using a special tool. Do not attempt this if you are not experienced. Sexing a snake is extremely stressful to the animal and/or could cause health problems if you do it incorrectly.

First of all, if this snake came from the wild I suggest you take it and let it loose in a wooded area. Reptiles caught in the wild will die in captivity. A female Garter is typically larger than a male. Could you provide a pic?

You can't. However, a trained vetrinarian can. Take your snake to the vets and he can look for your snake's penises (they have two apparently).

Throw another male snake in there- if the new eats the old one, it was boy, if they mate it's a girl!
