it's a team mentality and no one likes to see their team lose. people are not educated enough to make rational decisions, so they just go with the team of their friends or family.
Education is the only answer.

IMO, everyone needs to simply open their eyes - even you, my intelligent friend! The fact of the matter is that not all Republicans are the same, and not all Democrats are the same.
Some Republicans not only give to the needy, but spend much of their time volunteering. Some Democrats seek truth. People from both parties act like asses on a regular basis.
Many of us are registered with one or the other of these parties, but are smart enough to cast our votes based on what we know, as opposed to what the party says we should do. If we could all start really looking, and using our brains, we'd all be better off.

Don't preach to the choir. If you want to do it, then do it. It all starts with you. Make a grass roots movement.
Republicans and Democrats come in all flavors. Some good, some bad, some essentially the same. Oh, and if you want to get down to brass tacks, their stances on many issues are not as far apart as you might think.
The thing to remember is that there are no poor people in Congress or the White House. You have to be rich to play in politics and have connections. Generally politicians are wealthier when they leave office than when they first assumed it.
Not to mention their generous retirement package. Even if they only serve one term.

There is a 3rd party - The Independants.
The problem is what are they to stand for? On every issue, you are either right or left. People vote on that.
If you're going to have multiple parties, there should be 4.
Socially / Economically
Republicans Cons / Cons
Democrats Lib / Lib
Party #3 Cons / Lib
Party #4 Lib / Cons
There ya go!

The incumbents of both parties have rigged the system so it's next to impossible to form a new major party. Between campaign finance laws and ballot access laws, there are *huge* hurdles for any new party to overcome.
I still vote for third party candidates whenever I can - preferably libertarian, when the option is there. I refuse to vote for democrats or republicans, since both have proven themselves unacceptable to me.

Regardless of what FOX says, if the Democratic Party were in ANY other country in the world and had exactly the same ideas and rhetoric, it would be considered EXTREMELY conservative and free market oriented.
Republicans try to help the less fortunate, but they see it as proper to do this indirectly, ie-giving money and opportunities to people who have proven that they know what to do with them (this is what trickle down means).

Umm...the "People's Party" is what Hitler called his party...
And you don't have a clue what you're talking about. There's no way a 3rd party stands a chance with the structure that we have in America. We'd need a Parliamentary structure to have multiple parties. No to be a pessimist, but a new party would probably be just as corrupt as the other parties. The real answer is that people need to vote and hold their officials accountable for lies and ignored promises.

First of all, don't make a broad generalization of any of them. The Bush Administration is how you described Republicans, but there have been many great Republican presidents in the past.
And Democrats promote the general welfare of its citizens while supporting the free market. You are wrong about both.

germany has 5 or 6 parties. the problem is, the elected people never have a clear majority... with so many parties the vote is split several ways.
the new party still has to succeed on its merits... i agree that r/d are very similar because they are not challenged, but none of the old new parties are mounting much of one: libertarian, green, natural law etc...

That's a good question. Unfortunately, third party candidates are not given much opportunity to participate in debates on television. If they can't reach the public, then the public will continue to be unaware of them...
