Nelson's body was placed in a cask of brandy taken to Gibralter where it was transferred to lead lined coffin filled with wine.
The muffled whores would be muffled oars.

It's very true. Nelson's body was brought back to Britain in a barrel of brandy, which was later drank by his fellow sailors to commemorate his life.

well everyone would have wanted to see his body preserved not a bag of bones as it would have been if it hadn't been pickled in malmsey. and whores were commonplace in docks around this time so why not. i've heard of a lot weirder

His body was preserved, in a barrel of brandy. And He was given a state funeral. That's all I know. :)

according to the story I read, wine was traditionally used to "pickle" a body so it wouldn't rot away until the ship reached port
