Read the instructions it came with. If it's with iPod, then download iTunes for free. If it's something else, maybe it's simply plug-n-play.

I would suggest downloading iTunes to buy the songs and stuff and back them up on CDs and transfer them to your MP3 player.

There's a program out there that automatically does this (transfers iTunes stuff to your MP3 player) but it costs $20.

I am assuming you are planning on aquiring the songs in a legal manner:

If you are using an i-pod YOU MUST use i-tunes, Apple has gone to special lengths to make sure you use their service.

If you are using a generic Mp3 player you can use any of the official engines (the major ones being: Rhapsody, Yahoo!, and Napster)

i-tunes works strictly on a pay-by-song/album basis those songs are now yours forever. Other companies allow a subscription which makes all songs available. However, if you ever decide to cancel, you will lose access to all of those songs.

First, check the website of the engine you are planning on using, make sure it supports your player at the very least. Then go ahead and download it.

Any legal software you download will then have specific instructions for putting music on your player.
