Hi. The metal that was stamped with the numbers is slightly denser than the surrounding metal. An acid etch (swab) can sometimes make these denser areas show up.

Cirric has the right idea. I've seen this used on old coins, especially Buffalo nickels, to bring out the dates that had been worn off. Weak nitric acid is the best for this.

It screws the value of your coin, however.
