We in the UK are growing a gun culture just like yours. Soon the private citizen will have to carry one for self-defence. What have you folks found to be best- A Clint Eastwood type Magnum or a Robert De Niro taxi driver sliding one or just a little vest pocket Derringer?

IdahoMike, I like the way you find that we aren't allowed guns for self defence is an assault on freedoms. When you point out that it is this extra 'freedom' of yours which has given you such rampant gun crime, ours is negligible in comparison.
It's terrible that the USA has the right to own a gun enshrined in law. They're practically encouraging violence. I'd also like to point out that in generally personal freedoms are better here, if any country's freedoms are erroded it's the USA's.
The private citizen will never have to carry one for self defence here, or rather if they did it'd make the problem worse. To legalise owning a firearm for no good reason would mean criminals would find it oh so much easier to get their hands on the buggers.

I have a Glock 21, but it's not a good conceal gun, so it's home protection only. I carry a Berretta 22 cal, but don't like it in some pants pockets. I found a really nice little 25 cal made back in 1909 with no sharp edges, and smaller than my 22, but they wouldn't sell it to me because I'm not a US citizen.

I don't carry my pocket derringer for two reasons.
(1) it's a revolver so lint and dirt get into the chambers where you need a little choke lubricant. and
(2) It's single action.

If I ever really need the thing, I want to be able to get off alot of rounds in fast order, I don't want to be thumbing the hammer after each shot.

Did your masters they finally decide to let you Brit subservients arm yourselves? I thought you lived in a tyranny where guns were banned. Do you get to vote still, or did they take voting away altogether and end the facade.

Legaly? not going to happen over there... personal freedoms to far erroded... but if you can get your hands on a 357 mag. hammerless revolver that would be best... as it requires the least training to use and is easyest to maintain and almost never malfunctions. get one in six shot if possable. You can fire 38spcl rounds in it to cut down on the recoil and still have the knock down power needed for self defence. use +p loads with 125 gr hollow point bullet. If you know nothing about firearms avoid semiautos but if you just have to have one do not get 9mm... no use at all for self defence... you need something that is toing to put a man down with one or two shots... and a 9mm will not unlees you are absolutly a crack shot under stress... get a 45 or at least a 40... there are some that are small enough for concealment and are good for those with smaller hands. but any semiauto will malfunction if not well maintained... and a semiauto that is not frequently used will be prone to malfunction. stick with the revolver...
