format the hard drive

2006-09-29 08:43:36 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Formatting a drive will not remove any information from a hard drive. You will need to sanitize the drive, sanitising a drive destroys all information stored on it, including boot sector, the operating system and partition table. The drive is put in a virgin state, similar to when it was released from the factory.

in XP : open your "manage Computer, choose disk management, choose the drive you want to delete all info, and right click on it, and erase disk partition, it will never come back and to re-use the disk you need to re-partition (and format it by using right click again)

Or you may parttion specific software, or you may format drive in both dos environment or XP

Are you trowing away the hard drive? If so the BEST way is to remove it from the computer and drill holes through it. Bunches of holes. It is the ONLY way to be safe.
