Some say Blue Cheer but Black Sabbath really defined it better than anyone with their sound!

Deep Purple. They came out before Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest among others. Two out of three people surveyed believed that Deep Purple were the makers of heavy metal.

Iron Butterfly (of inagodavida fame) Their debut album released in 1967 was titled heavy.
alot of people would say led zeppelin whos first album was released in 1969 or black sabbath whos got together in 1968.. so according to time line the answer would be Iron butterfly
According to popularity and who made a stronger lasting mark on music I would say
Black Sabbath

Jethro Tull won the first MTV award; however, I don't think they should have been considered in that category.

I would agree with the first answer of Black Sabbath. I remember when Iron Man came out in the early 70s.

Black Sabbath, although....I think credit has to be given to Led Zeppelin and Helter Skelter by the Beatles, without which Sabbath would not have been possible.
