You can give a baby a sponge bath the night you go home from the hospital but don't submerge the umbilical cord. You can't give the baby a real bath until the umbilical cord falls off and even then you should wait a day or two after it comes off. Just to avoid infection.

A newborn should not be immersed in water until after the umbilical cord has fallen off and healed. Until then, it is OK to give the baby a sponge bath. Babies don't really get too dirty and their sensitive skin can dry out so a bath is not needed that often.

The baby gets a bath at the hospital right after it is born. You can start sponge bathing the baby as soon as you get home. I wouldn't bother to immerse a newborn in a tub (got to keep the umbilical stump dry) but a simple sponge bath is no big deal.

If by chance you happen to wet the umbilical cord before it has dried and fallen off, wipe it with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. This will help to dry it out again. As for the bathing, as mentioned by everyone else, sponge baths are fine on a daily basis until the cord has fallen off.

This depends the date (time period) in which your child was born...opinions keep changing. When my 1st was born, it was recommended that the baby gets a washcloth wipedown, but not a bath for @ least a week. Two yrs later, "its ok to give a newborn a bath. Don't worry about getting the cord wet, its just important to clean it properly afterward with a q-tip and water"....go figure

The nurses will give your baby a thorough sponge bath in the hospital very shortly after delivery. After that, you can give your baby a sponge bath daily. You shouldn't submerge your baby in her bathtub until her umbilical cord stump has fallen completely off, and her belly button is dry. (Sometimes the belly button can stay sort of "gooey" for a day or two after the stump falls off.)

You can give the baby a sponge bath right after but you should bathe him completely until the umbilical cord falls off. Plus if he's newborn how dirty could he be?

They can be sponge bathed from birth as long as you don't get the umbilical cord stub wet. Once the umbilical cord stub falls off they can have a real bath.

It's best to wait a few weeks before giving a baby a bath. It's usually recommend to give them a sponge bath. Especially for boys who are circumcised. Also, you have to think about their belly button.
