Why do people believe in these things?Have they seen them?

Most people think it comes from stories of fireflies. The stories we spread by travellors who didn't know what they were and the ideas spread.

The Tuatha De Danaan have been around probably longer than homosapiens. :-) So, of course people have seen them, more often in the ancient times when interspecies communications were a given. :-)
If you consider the adage that truth is often stanger than fiction (as you seem to be a non-believer), then in stands to reason that fairies or the fey folk themselves are the reason that people believe in 'these things.' :-)

isnt the whole origin of fairies, gnomes, elves built around irish folklore or something? i think its everywhere actually but the dam drunken irish word travels fast ;) i myself am irish so im not meaning any offense to anyone. i believe in fairies :) from experience and spirit with them muaha....

just like any religion, it's just a way to explain why simple things happen. like why milk goes sour.
