Im in 2nd year in university and im taking a women's studies class. We have a project to do on a type of discrimination towards women. I want to choose something a little less obvious then sexual violence. I need something original and im having trouble being creative. Any ideas?!

How about women being stereotyped by having to do the "house chores" if both of the partners work? Women are supposed to be the homemakers while most men think that it is the woman's job to prepare the food, take care of the children, do the shopping, etc. Why are there not more responsibilities put on the man as being the homemakers? This has been a pet peeve of mine for many years now. It is time for woman to either stay at home and do the "homemaker" job or be equal to men when it comes to being the "homemaker". We women have so many responsibilities today to be both the breadwinner and the homemaker. Does women's work ever get done? Can we possibly last long or are we going to burn out?

Thank you for your question.

How about a study of Hindu women? Especially if you concentrate on dowry killings. I'm sure you're likely informed on them but if not the dowry killings that are taking place involve the following;

Men require a large dowry (money or property) from the possible in-laws in order to marry their daughter. However, some men require additional dowry each year of marriage. If the her maternal/paternal family cannot provide tha,t she is of no use to the husband. Therefore, many convenient kitchin deaths have occured. The wife cooks and end up dieing of a kerosene explosion. However, it is revealed that many of these deaths were plotted to rid the wife. The newly widowed husband remarries with a new dowry coming in.

You could write about how young children are subtly taught which sex they should be and how that sex should behave. Women from the start are taught to be milder, less independent and more emotional. Girls don't yell as much as boys, when they ask for help, no one tells them they can do it on their own because that would be mean, and no one says that big girls shouldn't be as upset when something bad happens. I'm not saying it's a terrible epidemic, so no one fruit on me. I'm just saying it's in most psychology books and it would be a good subject for a women's studies paper.

There was a fascinating article just recently in the news about a woman in science who went through the transgender operation to become a man and how he now can see that women in science are strongly discriminated against.

how bout in sports? people just assume women are not good enough or strong enough. also, many people assume that women are not good in situations for fast thinking as well as calm decisions (due to having periods, and "emotional" days, etc). people also judge that women are either "b*tches" or "weak", not really competent. so there is no real middle ground.

i remember reading a question posted on here regarding karate, and a girl said she worked really hard to be good, and she beat a guy fair and square and he was pissed, and said "Gosh, i got beaten by a girl! it's not fair, cuz i had to hold back" or something like that.

religious discrimination - women can't be priests?

professional discrimination - know of any jobs with very few women, like dentists, maybe? (I don't know that this IS one of those job categories, I'm just picking it because I haven't seen any female dentists lately)

medical research discrimination - lots of research is done on men. Women may react differently to some drugs than men do. For example, drugs used to treat heart attacks may not be as effective on women.
