We just moved into this house. I don't know how old the tree is, but it does seem to be a mimosa (I'll ask the neighbors if it blooms) and I think it is sick. It has a patchy greenish film in areas of it's grey trunk and branches. It also has big gashes in it and black areas.

"big gashes" does NOT bode well. if the gashes are few, and they are vertical, then maybe. But if the wounds are horizontal, or many, the tree is probably doomed.

You can remove any dead branches at any time. If you' re uncertain what's dead and what's not, wait and see which branches do not sprout new growth in the spring, and then prune.

Mimosas are not strong or long-lived trees, so it could be your tree is also geriatric.

As far as the greenish film - hard to say without seeing it. You might take pictures and take it to your local nursery and see if they can look it up.
