Okay, I am only in my 10th week and don't know yet whether I am having a girl or boy. But I found the *cutest* nursery theme stuff with pink butterflies online! They have matching lampshades, nightlights, crib set, growth chart, etc..

But it is pretty girly and I would only want to use it for a girl, but I am afraid if I wait till I find out what I'm having it will be sold out. My husband of course would rather we have "sports" or "racecars" as theme for the nursery (uggh!)

I am thinking if it IS a boy, I can return it, right? Or should I hold off till things are more certain? When did YOU buy your nursery stuff and did you already know your baby's sex?

Just buy it now just in case. If you have a girl then you can use it. If it's a boy you can always just put it in the closet and save it for the next one. If you don't plan on having anymore kids after this one then try to return it or sell it on ebay and get your money back.

If you buy the pink butterfly stuff online now and then have a boy later you are going to regret it. Some places will only allow a certain period of time before you can return an item.
Even if the doctor tells you the sex of the baby, I would not stake my life on it. My daughter in law as well as several friend lately have had the opposite sex of what they were told.
I would do the following:
1. Buy the generic things you need now.
2. Buy a crib that would go for either sex.
3. Ask that no one throw you a shower until after the baby arrives.
This way you can register at Target and Babies are us for what you like and then if it isn't the right sex you can take the items back and exchange for the right sex.
4. Do buy several generic layettes and onesis, hats, socks and blankets to get you started.
5. Put aside money for the things that you and your husband would like in the room but purchase when you are for sure about the sex.

I would wait. You won't find out the baby's sex until sometime after 18 weeks anyway. If you are anxious to start the nursery then perhaps wait until you hit the 12 weeks mark (risk of miscarriage goes down) and then buy something that can be used for either boy of girl. That is what I did =)

OBTW - I swore up and down I was having a boy with my first and girl with my second - I have a daughter and another girl on the way. So instinct doesn't always prove to be correct.

Congrats.

I found a neutral one that I put on my baby shower registry. They had a baby Looney Tunes crib set that was ok for either boy or girl. I had to choose that because I didn't want to find out the sex of my baby, plus I would already have it for the future if I need it.

If I were you, I would wait. If you want to find out the sex of your baby, go ahead, and then get the nursery stuff if you want specifically boy or girl stuff. Or just get something neutral, and that way you are covered, especially in case you have the opposite sex of what you were supposed to!

I tried to pick neutral themes for my babies' nurseries (Pooh and Sesame Street), I bought things slowly, over the course of my pregnancies.

As for buying the butterfly items now, would you be able to leave them in the boxes if you bought them now? Sometimes if you have put things up (you'll want to wash the crib set in Dreft or something like it) you can't return them.

I'd wait until I knew the sex to buy anything definately female or male for the nursery.

Personally, I never wanted to know the sex of my baby beforehand, I wanted to be surprised. I got the crib, dresser, changing table early on, but waited on the other stuff. There are plenty of unisex themes to go for. I never put too much emphasis on the nursery until my baby got a few months older. They outgrow things so fast.

Hold off until you find out the sex. I wanted to buy stuff early, but every time I went into a store, I found something cuter. There are 20 zillion nursery sets out there, if yours gets discontinued I am sure you will find something you like as much. OR, if you know someone who can sew, get them to help out. Cheaper that way too.

I think that you should wait until until late in your pregnancy. The reason I say is because I've known alot of couples who start buying things and then something happens or they have a miscarriage, happened to me also. So I think that you should wait. And there are lots of cute baby girl themes out there so many or you can always find the one you're looking for online!

I am 27 weeks pregnant, going on 28, and I just started buying stuff like that. I would wait. Also, if you are having a baby shower someone might buy it for you and you can save the money. Diapers are not cheap! And did you know that the average newborn uses 10-15 diapers a day? I would save your money!

Hold off. Some else may buy it for you anyways...did you register? In the mean time, why don't you work on some neutral stuff. Do you have the furniture? Some clothes?
I found out as soon as I could, then I registered and most of the stuff on my registry was bought and given to me at my shower.
I did get some girly things for her...special things from me.
